Last fall, Frelinghuysen and NJDEP Director Robert Shinn held a news conference supporting what is called "Clean Lakes" funding on the shores of Lake Hopatcong and rode on the Lake's weed harvester, a WEEDCAT™ from United Marine International, which was purchased with federal Clean Lakes funding. Frelinghuysen said, "Lake Hopatcong is New Jersey's largest lake, and I want to make it New Jersey's cleanest lake as well. Thousands of families enjoy the lake every year, and they should enjoy the purest and safest water while swimming, boating and fishing - these funds will do just that. Furthermore, clean lakes mean more jobs and a stronger economy for the region." The Lake Hopatcong Regional Planning Board (LHRPB) will ultimately decide how to spend the funding.
