United Marine International LLC (UMI) of Baltimore, MD, USA, the world's leading manufacturer of Marine Trash Skimmer boats, with over 50 Trash Skimmers in operation worldwide, announces the delivery of new TRASHCAT™ skimmer vessels to the cities of Baltimore, MD and Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

UMI, whose principals pioneered the concept that has set today's standards for trash skimmer designs, incorporated several unique features in the boats. These vessels will enable highly effective floating debris cleanup operations in the high traffic waterway environments of Baltimore's Inner Harbor and throughout Ft. Lauderdale's 140 mile-long intricate residential and commercial canal system, including the Intracoastal Waterway.

The City of Baltimore took delivery of the first of two Low Profile TRASHCAT™ boats in March. Unit #1, UMI Model #TC-200L (200 cu.ft. on board storage capacity), is designed with a side-mounted operator's cab, which provides the operator with 6'-11" of overhead clearance. Unit #2, UMI Model #TC-200LP, has a unique Extra Low Profile which is obtained by providing a side-mounted operator's cab with a tilt-over feature. The cab can also be easily removed to provide 50" overhead clearance. The City of Baltimore specified this design to enable the skimmer to maneuver under pedestrian bridges specially designed with low slopes to assist handicapped tourists to cross its Inner Harbor canal systems. In order to deal with the corrosive salt water conditions of Baltimore's harbor, both skimmers are completely fabricated of 304L stainless steel. These two TRASHCAT™ skimmers are the 7th and 8th units purchased from UMI since Baltimore first implemented its successful Inner Harbor floating debris clean-up program in 1987. In acceptance trials the trash skimmers exceeded 6 knots loaded.

At a dedication ceremony held at its waterfront Esplanade Park Mayor Jim Naugle of the City of Ft. Lauderdale introduced "The Pollution Solution", its UMI Model #TC-200L TRASHCAT™. Almost 5000 students participated in the contest: "Pollution Solution" beat "Trash Master" by a narrow margin. The TRASHCAT™ was named through a contest held among Ft. Lauderdale school children. Along with the TRASHCAT™, Ft. Lauderdale also purchased a UMI Model #TS-200 high speed Transport Shuttle Barge and a UMI Model #TLT-200 Tilt & Load Trailer.

The Transport Shuttle Barge is specially designed to receive debris offloaded directly from the TRASHCAT™ into its 200 cu. ft. removable storage container. Ft. Lauderdale's canals, virtually all of which are along highly developed property, had no readily available accessible staging areas for offloading the TRASHCAT™. Using the matched Transport Shuttle Barge enables the skimmer vessel to unload itself quickly wherever it is operating and to continue its mission of removing floating debris with minimal non-performing time. The Tilt & Load Trailer can transport either the TRASHCAT™ or the Transport Shuttle Barge over the highways, as well as launch or retrieve them from the water or on the ground during maintenance or storage.

The TRASHCAT™ is equipped with a hinged removable operator's cab in order to clear low overhead bridges. Its 10 ft. operating width enables it to maneuver in the tight quarters of Ft. Lauderdale's residential system.
