The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) has given the Port of Houston Authority (PHA) an award for its development of a unique trash skimming program along the Buffalo Bayou, an important part of the regional watershed.

The Houston project was one of 152 entries submitted by 37 ports worldwide for consideration for the AAPA award.

PHA has prepared an informative report on this program to control "floatables".

Key conclusions of the report:

  • The "Mighty Tidy" TrashCat™ trash skimmer is "an extraordinarily effective weapon against floating pollution"
  • The trash skimmer program helped the PHA to conform to Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit requirements and helped project co-sponsor Harris County conform to National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) obligations.
